To date the ESG investment market has focused on renewable power generation, electric vehicles and some recycling whilst largely ignoring the essential component underpinning the global energy transition – the mining of critical minerals.

A circular economy results from mining processes that minimise, reuse and ultimately eliminate waste, and from product design and collection processes that harvest and reuse metals indefinitely.

In Australia (in 2022) less than 10 percent of mines have meaningful renewable power with most still relying on on-site fossil fuel generation. Co-located with a mine, renewable power including wind and solar PV) can be used to reduce/replace current diesel/gas generation and to sell excess power to the grid.

Transportation:
By far the most carbon intensive element of the mining process is transportation. Fleets of Trucks, Trains and Ships are still largely diesel powered. Switching to hydrogen power or electrified dump trucks and excavators provides the most powerful reduction in Co2 emissions.

Key to the Energy Transition
▪ Society is at the start of another industrial revolution based on critical minerals and technology.
▪ Critical minerals are used in almost every component of renewable generation, storage, electricity
transmission / distribution and optical fibre and semi-conductor manufacture.
▪ Half of Australian mines undertaking metallic minerals processing rely on fossil fuel generation.
▪ Diesel costs $250-400/Mwh versus delivered $100-200/Mwh for solar PV. Deploying renewable energy is
a ‘no brainer’ for mining companies but requires capital.
